Military spouses often face unique challenges when it comes to finding employment due to frequent relocations and deployments. However, with the rise of remote work opportunities, there has never been a better time for military spouses to explore flexible work options from the comfort of their own homes. One such opportunity is becoming a virtual assistant (VA), which allows military spouses to leverage their skills and provide essential administrative support to businesses remotely.
Here are the highlights from my conversation with Molly Rose Speed, a military spouse and the creator of the Virtual Assistant Academy:
Molly Rose’s journey as a virtual assistant began when she embraced the remote work lifestyle during her husband’s deployment. She discovered that she could work from anywhere in the world while making good money. As her peers expressed interest in her lifestyle, Molly realized the potential to help more military spouses by creating a comprehensive training program. Thus, the Virtual Assistant Academy was born.
While the term “virtual assistant” can encompass various skill sets, Molly emphasizes that the general focus lies in administrative support and being a business’s backbone. Virtual assistants handle tasks such as email management, customer support, online scheduling, social media management, travel booking, and even basic marketing responsibilities. They play a crucial role in supporting businesses’ operations and helping them thrive in the digital age.
Molly dispels the notion that specific educational backgrounds or prior experience are necessary to become a virtual assistant. The most crucial qualities are the ability to learn and figure things out independently. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and proficiency in basic computer software are also essential. While some skills can be learned along the way, having a proactive and responsible mindset is crucial to succeed as a VA.
The earning potential for virtual assistants varies based on experience and the level of responsibility they take on. Post-pandemic, virtual assistants can expect to earn no less than $25 per hour, with the potential to earn up to $50 per hour. Additionally, as VAs gain experience and transition into roles like Operations Business Managers, their income can increase even further. The flexibility of this career path allows military spouses to earn a significant income while maintaining a work-life balance.
To find clients, Molly emphasizes the importance of professionalizing your virtual assistant services and networking with your existing connections. Sharing your skills and services with friends, family, and neighbors can lead to referrals and job opportunities. Additionally, utilizing social media platforms to announce your services and engaging in consistent marketing efforts can help attract potential clients. Molly also offers a placement agency that matches certified VAs with job opportunities, providing further support and guidance in finding clients.
While it is possible to embark on a virtual assistant career independently, Molly Rose’s Virtual Assistant Academy offers a comprehensive training program to help military spouses start and grow their businesses successfully. The academy consists of a business academy and a tech academy, providing training on both the business aspects of running a VA business and the necessary technical skills. By enrolling in the academy, military spouses gain access to professional guidance, certification, and a supportive community to kickstart their virtual assistant journey.
Becoming a virtual assistant offers military spouses the opportunity to work from home, contribute to their household income, and establish a fulfilling career that can be carried across multiple locations. By acquiring the necessary skills, adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, and leveraging the support and resources available, military spouses can embark on a fulfilling career path that can move with them.
