6 Time Management Hacks for Military Spouses

Sometimes it feels like there is never enough time during the day.

Especially if you have littles at home, you are working full time, or you are currently solo parenting, it can feel like every hour of the day is spoken for. Amiright??

And while you would absolutely love to find time for yourself, or to actually start that business, or pursue that goal, it just never seems to happen. I totally get this because I’ve been there. Heck, some days I’m still there.

But when I think back to what I’ve learned in the last six years of working from home and navigating military life, there are six time management hacks that have been really helpful to me as a work from home military spouse. Want to know what they are? Let’s chat about it!

6 Tips to Help You Manage Time Effectively

1. Establish a Morning Routine

Start your day off right by establishing a morning routine. Taking a few minutes for yourself before the chaos begins can make a significant difference. Use this time to prepare mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for the day ahead. Reflect on your priorities, set intentions, and focus on what matters most. Check out episode 22 of my podcast for more on creating a morning routine that works for you.

2. Prioritize Tasks for Maximum Impact

To make the most of your limited time, prioritize your tasks. Determine the top two or three things that need to be done each day and focus on those first. By accomplishing your most important tasks, you’ll create a sense of progress and make everything else fall into place.

3. Establish a Schedule and Stick to It

Having a schedule and routine is crucial, even if it goes against your preference for flexibility. Set a weekly schedule that accommodates your family’s needs and adjust it as necessary. Time blocking can help you allocate dedicated periods for work, childcare, household chores, and self-care. By following a schedule, you’ll better manage your time and achieve your goals.

4. Embrace Focus over Multitasking

Contrary to popular belief, multitasking doesn’t always lead to increased productivity. Instead, focus on one task at a time and give it your full attention. Research has shown that focusing on a single project can yield better results and reduce the likelihood of errors. So, avoid distractions and give your undivided attention to the task at hand.

5. Minimize Distractions for Optimal Focus

Distractions can prevent us from being productive. Minimize distractions within your control, such as social media, email notifications, and phone alerts. Turn on focus mode or temporarily delete social media apps if necessary. Creating a distraction-free environment will help you stay on track and complete tasks more efficiently.

6. Use a Timer to Enhance Productivity

Harness the power of timers to improve your time management. Set a timer for specific tasks and allocate a set amount of time to complete them. This technique promotes focus and prevents tasks from taking longer than necessary. By using a timer, you’ll stay on track and be more productive.

Bonus Tip: Prioritize Rest and Quality Sleep

Getting enough rest, especially quality sleep, is the foundation of effective time management. Without adequate sleep, our productivity, decision-making, and overall well-being suffer. Make sure to prioritize rest and create a sleep routine that works for you and your family.

Time Management as a Military Spouse

Managing time effectively as a busy military spouse is challenging but not impossible. By implementing these six time management hacks, you can regain control of your schedule and find time to pursue your goals. Remember to establish a morning routine, prioritize tasks, set a schedule, single-task, minimize distractions, use a timer, and prioritize rest. With these strategies in place, you’ll be well on your way to living a purposeful and fulfilling life as a military spouse.
