First day. New school. First year with no uniforms

First day. New school. First year with no uniforms 😳

I’m so thankful they are all at the same school. This hasn’t happened since the last time we were stationed here (when they were all in preschool 🤪)

In true military kid fashion, my youngest is starting kindergarten…but this is already her 6th school/program. She’s definitely ready!

The real OG Milspouse.

My grandma passed away last week at the age of 103. She was an Air Force spouse before the Air Force even existed. She married my grandfather in 1940, right before World War II. My grandfather signed up with the Army Air Corps, which became the Army Air Forces, and became a B17 pilot. He headed off to Europe to fight in the war, where he would later be awarded a silver star and a Purple Heart. After the war, he went on to serve over 25 more years in the Air Force.

Through all of it, my grandma held down the home front, raising five kids, and actively volunteering in spouses clubs and other charities. She PCSed a total of 29 times #thatsnojoke. She also spent 45 years serving as a “grey lady” for the Red Cross.

She could tell stories for days. And despite all the crazy stories and challenges she experienced in her life, she never lost her sense of humor or her ability to drop a witty one liner.

As a kid growing up sitting around the dining table listening to my grandma and my uncles and aunts tell stories of military life, I had no idea that those stories, and her “well, you just make it happen, because you have to” attitude would deeply impact me and influence my own experience as a military spouse.

I have no idea what it’s like to have your spouse go off to war and to have written letters be your only form of communication. I have no idea what it’s like to be a woman driving across the country alone (because of military life) with no cell phone, and in an era where “women just don’t do that.”

But I know what it feels like to have changes of plans thrown at you. I know what it feels like to not be able to make hard plans about anything. I know what it feels like to worry about your spouse when they are deployed. I know what it’s like to travel alone with kids. I know what it feels like to pack up your life and start over every couple of years.

Grandma lived a full life. I’m thankful for the life she lived, the lessons she taught, and the love she shared. And I’m thankful for the opportunity to celebrate her life and legacy.

Thank you, Grandma, for showing me...and all of us, how to milspouse.

A story of PCS pivots: Not the base we were orig

A story of PCS pivots:

Not the base we were originally told we would be going to, but here we are. Believing this is where we are supposed to be for this season.

Not the car we thought we would be buying, but we have a vehicle. And it is pretty great. 🚘

Not the house we thought that we would be renting, but we have a house. I’m excited for the school district the kids will be in!

Not the weather we were hoping for moving day, but house hold goods have been delivered! It poured rain when we packed out from Hawaii (which is very unusual) and we had crazy flash flooding (also unusual) in Illinois during our delivery. Thankfully we had rock star moving crews who made the best of the situation on both ends!

Not the order we thought we would get our stuff in, but thankful to have our household goods! For context, during our last PCS, our quick shipment arrived in three weeks. Our household goods took 4 months. This time, our household goods arrived in 5 weeks 🙌🏼 and our “quick” shipment is somewhere in California… 😂

No pictures of the house yet, because technically we’re still sleeping in temporary lodging…and I’m on a plane headed to a funeral.

A little change of scenery…
I can’t say I’m happy about leaving Hawaii, but I can say I’m working to hold both the grief of leaving our island adventure and to believe good things are ahead.
